Nickel metal hydride (NiMH) technology has
revolutionized battery performance, opening up entire new
fields of applications. Currently used in electric and hybrid-electric
vehicles, and stationary power applications such as uninterruptible
power supply and telecom, these rechargeable batteries have
higher power and a longer life than conventional batteries
and are environmentally benign.

Ovonic Battery Company Partnership
Chevron and Ovonic Battery Company, Inc., a subsidiary of
Energy Conversion Devices, Inc., have formed a partnership called
Cobasys to bring these advanced battery systems
into widespread commercial production. Our goal is to produce a
family of advanced battery systems that can meet a wide range of
potential customer applications.
"By leveraging the strengths
and core competencies of both parent companies, we're making
inroads in the marketplace for this important new technology"
—Tom Neslage, President and Chief Operating Officer Cobasys
In July 2002, the Department of Energy awarded Cobasys a $5.2 million, two-year cost-sharing contract as part
of its FreedomCAR initiative.
